The Oscars came again, this year with The Hurt Locker taking home best picture, shutting out that little movie with the blue people... Avatar was it??? There were some other surprises such as Sandra Bullock winning for best actress but all of that aside, let's focus on the important things... the dresses. It is one of the main reasons why I watch the Oscars after all. Celebrities have become more and more of an important fixture in fashion, and though I may not love this idea I do enjoy watching the red carpet to see who wears what. There were some good, some not so good. Overall I thought it was a good year, lots of colour, a few risk takers, but I did have some favorites...
This was probably my favorite look of the night. Carey Mulligan in Prada. She's young, cute, talented and knows how to dress herself. She even refused the advice that Anna Wintour (aka Editor in Chief of Vogue) gave her when she said she should wear a short dress to the Oscars which is pretty great. Regardless of whether she took the advice or not, she looked great in the black. Also really into how it cuts shorter in the front but different from the minis that have been seen at Nina Ricci for a while.
J. Lo. Yeah she was at the Oscars. Why? Couldn't tell you. But she did whip out this little bubble-wrap-esque number by Armani Prive.
This was another one of my favorites, Rachel McAdams in Ellie Saab Haute Couture. Can't really go wrong with that cut and I am a huge fan of the overly large muted floral print. Simple and pretty.
This I can't say I was a huge fan of however. I wanted to like it, I really did but something just falls a bit flat for me. Lack lustre maybe. It's Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel Haute Couture but something isn't quite working for me.
Meryl. Chris March dress. Gorgeous. Simple. Age apropro. She can do no wrong.
Tom Ford. What a classy man, wearing his own design. I love a good bow tie.
Charlize Therone was a riskier one for me. Christian Dior. It's fun. I don't know, I guess since she was just a presenter and really didn't have a whole lot riding on this night she was able to go a little crazier. The thing I like most about this is the red lips with the lilac colour of the dress. Makes for an interesting combination that somehow works very well.
Ooooo Diane Kruger in Chanel Haute Couture. Another one of my favorites. She's another one who knows how to dress and always wears some really interesting things. It also doesn't hurt that Inglorious Bastards was a very good movie.
Nicole Richie in Reem Acra. I thought she looked pretty good, she stuck to the whole boho, 70s thing that she's been doing for a while now but in a more sophisticated and polished way. Kind of random that she was there and that Joel Madden was chosen to DJ the after party so I guess she would come along for the ride. Seeing as I don't think it is very likely that she will be there in the future for acting ability... The Simple Life, let's be serious. I kind of miss her in that role though. I think we should all take the time to remember the trashy, navel bearing, mini dog toting Nicole Richie.
Whyyyy?? Miley Cyrus in Jenny Packham. Whyyyyy? She just looks a bit off. The dress is alright but she just looks strange, like uncomfortable or slouchy or something. And the fact that she seems to be constantly stuck in the bratty 16 year old phase isn't helping her case. I don't really want to spend any more time talking about this.
On the other hand here is another young celeb who did it right. Anna Kendrick in Ellie Saab Haute Couture. I mostly just really love this colour and the lace in the slit (I don't know if it really shows up that well) is quite great. For being young, and a first time nominee I thought she looked great.
Phew. I can't believe it's over already. There it is, my little rant about Oscars dresses and other major world issues.
