These are a few of my favorite things...

So, as mentioned, in my first post I believe, I said that I was an avid reader of a few blogs. They have become such an important fixture in the world of fashion and their influence is undeniable with bloggers being looked at first for the latest trends (ughh I hate that word) and bloggers even becoming employed by other fashion media outlets such as major magazines and websites for their take on fashion at the moment. Here are a few of my favorites and with some other random things that I am just a bit obsessed with at the moment...

1. Tavi Gevinson

Tavi is a 13 year old fashion blogger who has gotten crazy recognition lately. This is due to the
fact that she is wise beyond her years when it comes to fashion, hilarious, witty, quirky, has an incredible sense of style and is already a muse for designers... and she's 13! Kind of makes me feel like I'm doing nothing substantial with my life when I read her blog and she talks about going to all the latest shows (she was recently just at Couture week in Paris!) and all the amazing
things she's doing.

My friends and I have pretty much incorporated her into our everyday lives, talking about her latest post, and how amazing/crazy she is or coining an outfit, piece, or anything "so Tavi." One of the pictures of her from her blog is my profile picture on facebook. Needless to say I'm obsessed and I think she's awesome and look forward to every new post she puts up!

2. Jak and Jil Blog

Jak and Jil is a blog that I love looking to for amazing pictures and overall inspiring things. It's done by Tommy Ton, an amazing photographer that also works with Vogue and style.com. I love the way he shoots people and things to make them look so effortless and cool.

3. Garance Dore

Oh Garance. How I love her so. An amazing woman with impeccable taste. I really love her blog because she posts things that she finds inspiring on all her worldly travels and within the fashion industry. She is also an incredible fashion illustrator and posts those as well which is
makes her site pretty unique. My friend Lauren and I kind of got a bunch of our friends hooked on her blog as well.

4. Scott Schuman aka The Sartorialist

This is one of the first fashion blogs that I got into, ohh about 3 or 4 years ago. His blog is great in the sense that he started off just taking photos of people on the street that he thought were dressed very well, and that he really thought embodied style. His blog was also named by Time Magazine as one of the top 100 design influencers. He has now put out a book with his pictures and collaborates with style.com and designers for their ad campaigns which really goes to show the impact of blogging today. He is also dating Garance (see above) which is pretty much the ultimate fashion couple and adorable.

5. Alexa Chung

Alexa, Alexa, Alexa. So last summer after school was finished I decided that I wanted to chop all of my hair off (for a fresh start, change and all that good stuff). When I went looking for a style that I liked, I immediately remembered this cool looking girl that I saw on this British television show named Alexa Chung. After googling and googling I fell in love with her as she is the epitome of British cool and can not get enough of her or anything about her. I also may or may not have an entire album of pictures of her on my computer... may or may not! It's a little excessive.

So I cut about 7 inches of hair off. Here is the picture that inspired it all.

Now whenever my friends see anything about her they know to let me know because I will probably freak out a bit and they know I will appreciate it. My friend Lauren who is also a devotee to fashion blogs made me these amazing posters that are now hanging on my wall with pictures from her favorite blogs and also a fair few Alexa photos.

I must say I was quite upset when I learned that her MTV show, It's On With Alexa Chung, was cancelled in the states. When the show was on, MTV would blog about what she was wearing which I very stalker-esque-ly followed.

Well I hope you enjoyed this little rant that I had about some of the things I'm into. I will leave you with this video of Tavi dancing to ABBA. AMAZING. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugI34M12Fdg&feature=related

Lisztomania

So something pretty great happened on Friday of this past week. I went to see PHOENIX! They just so happened to be one of my favorite bands so as one can imagine I was a bit excited. And they definitely did not disappoint. But first let's talk about some other things...

I went to the concert with some of my friends; Sam, Robyn, and Lauren. Seeing as this is a style blog of sorts I thought I should show what we actually wore! I LOVE Phoenixand their laid back Parisian effortless style so that helped me to decide on my ensemble of acid wash american apparel leggings, grey mini dress, brown pirate boots and military-esque jacket, oh and a very large bag to carry t shirts from the concert etc. which always usually turns into a communal sack for all of my friend's things too. Here we are. Sam's on the left with the cape coat from Topshop that I am quite envious of. Next is Lauren, super happy in her brown boots and leather jacket. Then me :) The far right is Robyn in the super comfy grey tunic and not so comfy ankle boots that were quickly swapped for flats.

But enough about that. The concert was AMAZING! It started off with the opener You Say Party, We Say Die. Funny story. So we're sitting in our seats and all of a sudden an older woman turns back to us and asks who we are there to see. When we responded with "Phoenix" she seemed very disapointed. It turns out that her son is the guitarist in the openening band. She described him as the cute one with long hair, a beard -- the Jesus looking one.

We had a good laugh at that for a while and then got to talking and pretty much got her life story: where her and her husband met (at UBC 39 years ago!!) and why the band has trouble touring in the states (Sam asked her that question to get the inside scoop). And then Phoenix came out...

They were pretty much everything that I had imagined them to be, and then that times about 28508972508927. Yeah. The energy was amazing with the entire crowd singing along to every song and then to top it all off for their very last song, 1901, they brought up just about as many fans as they could fit onto the stage for a crazy dance party/sing-a-long (so jealous Adrian!). You coldn't even see the band at that point but it didn't matter - just to take in everything that was going on and the epic propotion of their performance was good enough. They seemed like such nice guys; nerdy, French, amazing. It was such an incredible night, one of the best live performances I have seen. On top of that so much dancing and singing from the crowd making for a night to remember!

Art, dolls, and sushi

So I went to an art auction Thursday night with some friends. It was put on by UBC's Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the Anza with students showcasing their work which pretty much gave people a chance to come out and show their support. It was a silent auction followed by a live auction. I mostly went because a friend of mine wanted to look into getting some art for his condo and thought this would be a good place to have a look. Also, it was a cooler thing to do on a random Thursday night than sitting in residence and painstakingly deciding what movie to watch for the 1 000th time... I mean studying. So we went. We got a good chance to check out the pieces; everything from the extremely eccentric (deconstructed dolls with woven adornments) to the more modern. Here's some of the stuff.

Here are the dolls. Yeah...

My friend Bryan who was looking to buy was really liking the two paintings on the left.
It was a very artsy scene. Another one of my friends/roommate/bff, Sam, who also came is looking to get in to UBC's visual arts program so it was a interesting opportunity for her to see what she could be doing in 3ish years and get the whole vibe.
Overall I thought it was a cool event, good to go out and support good ol' UBC students. There was even some live music and free food which is always a bonus! In the end Bryan didn't end up getting any of the pieces and we ended up going to get sushi. 'Twas a good Thursday night!

Here we go...

So here it goes, my first attempt at blogging… other than Twitter I guess. The main premise is to create a fashion blog of sorts. I am an avid reader of several fashion blogs and I’m hoping to compile some of my favorite elements from each that I love and create my own. That is if I can figure out this whole blogspot thing. I’m not too sure what the result will be but I’m hoping to post the things that inspire me and see how it goes from there. Hope you enjoy reading!
